What Are Prediction Markets and How Do They Work?

Prediction markets let you trade on the outcome of real-world events. Think of them as a stock market for everything - sports, politics, crypto prices, culture, weather, whatever people care enough to put money on.

How Prediction Markets Work

A prediction market creates a contract for a specific question. For example: "Will Bitcoin hit $100K by June 2026?" Traders buy YES or NO shares. The price of each share reflects the market's collective probability estimate.

If you buy a YES share at $0.35, you're saying there's roughly a 35% chance it happens. If the event occurs, your share pays out $1.00. If it doesn't, it pays $0. The difference between your purchase price and the payout is your profit.

Why Crypto Prediction Markets Are Different

Traditional prediction markets like Kalshi run on centralized infrastructure with fiat currency. Crypto prediction markets run on-chain, which means settlement is automatic, transparent, and trustless. No counterparty risk. No payout delays. The smart contract handles everything.

Blizz Markets is built on Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase. This means low gas fees, fast transactions, and the security of Ethereum under the hood.

What Can You Trade On?

Almost anything with a verifiable outcome. Sports results, election outcomes, crypto price targets, entertainment events, economic indicators, and more. If it can be resolved with a yes or no answer, it can be a prediction market.

Prediction Markets vs Sports Trading

If you've ever placed a sports trade, you already understand prediction markets. The core mechanic is the same: analyze the probability of an outcome and take a position. The difference is that prediction markets cover everything, not just sports. And on-chain prediction markets give you better odds because there's no traditional bookmaker margin.
